Intel announced the beginning of product discontinuance program for its Pentium III 700MHz and 733MHz CPUs. The supplies of the boxed packages have been already stopped, while the tray (OEM) CPU will still be available for ordering from Intel until 8 June.
By removing the youngest Pentium III models from the market, Intel seems to be preparing a vacant niche for its new Entry level product. Intel Celeron 850MHz, a new processor with 100MHz FSB, will be announced in Q2 2001 and since its performance seems to be hardly that different from the performance of Intel Pentium III 700MHz, and even from that of Pentium III 733MHz, the new Celeron is very likely to replace those two in the today’s market.
