Transmeta Company known for its unusual Crusoe processors officially announced that they are canceling the work on the new TM CPU – TM6000, because they believe that the currently produced TM5800 CPU meets the user’s requirements combining relatively high performance with extremely low power consumption and low price. As to the company officials, they are going to focus on systems-on-a-chip and will continue enhancing TM5800 so that to optimize it best for the customer needs.
At present Transmeta is busy carrying out global restructuring, which should reduce quarterly expenses and increase the revenues. Although the company’s profits in Q2 2002 grew up by 82% compared with Q1 2002 and reached $7.5 million against $4.1 million, this never meant higher net revenues, as the losses reached $24.7 million (without the restructuring expenses) compared with $23.2 million in Q1.<%BANNER[article]%>
As for the details of this process, Transmeta has already reduced the number of its employees by 40%, which is around 200 people, and is also planning to reduce the quarterly expenses to $20 million starting with Q4 2002.
Now they have already spent $10.6 million in Q2 on restructuring and are going to spend another $4-$4.5 million. Transmeta forecasts that in Q4 2003 their business will become profitable. If they manage to survive and to complete the work on the long-awaited 256bit VLIW TM8000.
