As is known, the last version of SiS’ plans (see this news story) SiS746 chipset was supposed to be the last solution for AMD Athlon processors, as the company was planning to focus the entire effort on the Pentium 4 market and return to AMD platform only with the launching of the new Hammer CPUs.
In fact, this is a pretty logical solution (the company lacks production capacities, so it would be better to focus on the mass market). Besides, SiS’ success has been evident with the naked eye lately, so to say (see this news story).<%BANNER[article]%>
However, now the company seems to have changed its vision of the future, as at present they are planning to continue supporting Athlon platform and to launch a new chipset – SiS746DX, which will differ from SiS746 by the support of faster DDR400. SiS746DX is expected to be launching some time in this quarter. In fact, both chipsets are almost similar for us, users, as SiS746 hasn’t yet started producing in mass quantities, even though the sampling is already in full swing (and has been in full swing since April).
By the way, I hope that this time SiS’ engineers will work harder on the new chipsets and will avoid such situations as with SiS745 (see the article called 5 Socket A Mainboards Supporting DDR333 on VIA KT333 and SiS745 for details). Otherwise, they will simply lose Athlon market once and for all.
