The event, which has been the talk of the town since the end of last week has finally happened. AMD made an official press-release announcing that they are starting to ship new processors for their portable PCs. I am talking about Athlon XP 1800+ working at 1.53GHz (266MHz DDR system bus). Like its predecessors (1400+, 1700+, see this news story) the new CPU is based on Thoroughbred core, supports PowerNow! technology, 3DNow! Professional instructions and is made with 0.13micron technology in Dresden fab30. The official price of this mobile Athlon XP 1800+ makes $335 for 1,000-unit quantities.

Notebooks with the new processor have already been launched by Hewlett-Packard and ACER Europe. For instance, these are the new HP Pavilion with 15” monitor, 512MB RAM, 30GB HDD and DVD/CD-RW combo drive. The notebook is selling for $1799.<%BANNER[article]%>

At present the mobile AMD Athlon XP processors are intended for Socket A only. These chips fit into full-size notebooks weighing 2.4-3.2kg. Then AMD is going to start packing its mobile offsprings into more compact uPGA cases, which will allow designing thin and light notebooks weighing only 1.6-2kg. The CPUs in this new package are already shipping in limited quantities, though they should be officially announced somewhat later this year.
