The struggling Korean memory maker Hynix Semiconductor started to sample the world’s fastest DDR SDRAM memory chips that function at 500MHz, providing 1000Mb/s (1Gb/s) bandwidth per pin.
The DDR SDRAM chip is in 4Mx32 128Mbit configuration, and uses a 144-ball FBGA package. According to spokesperson from Hynix, even such fast DDR-I memory chip is about 10% less expensive compared to the DDR-II device with the same speed. The company plans to start the mass production of 500MHz DDR SDRAM products in the nearest future.<%BANNER[article]%>
Fast DDR SDRAM memory devices are often used in graphics cards and telecommunication equipment. I want to stress that mainly expensive memory is utilised with high-performance bandwidth-hungry graphics cards for gamers and 3D-designers.
Hynix will start to offer DDR-II SDRAM 500 (1000)MHz chips in the first quarter 2003.
