Samsung Electronics today announced that global supercomputer leader Cray, Inc. has selected Samsung RDRAM memory for the Cray X1 supercomputer. The Cray expects the X1, which is being formally launched today, to be the world's most powerful supercomputer product. It is not a very surprising decision since Samsung is at the moment the only big memory maker that can provide Cray enough PC800 RDRAM memory products for its supercomputers.
The Cray X1 relies on Samsung’s RDRAM for its extreme memory performance. With an aggregate memory bandwidth of 6.4GB/s, the four-channel RDRAM module provides the highest performance memory currently on the market. <%BANNER[article]%>
The Cray X1 is designed to drive advances in aerospace and automotive engineering, national security, and weather and climate prediction. The Cray X1 scales to more than 52 trillions of peak calculations per second (teraflops) compared to 40teraflops of NEC's Earth Simulator, and is designed to be substantially faster on real-world problems than competing systems.
