Sticking to the recent promise of the company CTO (Chief Technology Officer), Mr. Fu Tai Liou (see this news story), UMC today announced that they officially started mass shipments of 0.13micron chips. UMC’s first customers to buy these chips appeared Xilinx Inc. and Ricoh Co, Ltd.

However, this announcement shouldn’t be regarded as clear evident of the immediate beginning of 0.13micron chips shipments. For example, the company’s earlier plans claim that the chips manufactured with new technology should start shipping in mass quantities only in summer. Besides, Ricoh, which has placed an order for 0.13micron copper interconnect ASIC chips with UMC is expecting it to be completed only by August.<%BANNER[article]%>

So, it looks as if UMC simply wanted to remind us that they do have a 0.13micron manufacturing technology and will be using it actively.
