VIA Zoetrope: No More Waiting?

Do you still remember about VIA/S3 graphics chip called Zoetrope? If you do, then it means that you’ve got excellent memory, as there hasn’t been a word mentioned about it for ages. The first mention of this product dates back to last January (see this news story), then we heard about it during the Platform Conference 2001 last July (see this news story), and then it was mentioned in VIA chipset plans as a new graphics core to be integrated into some upcoming VIA chipsets.

And now, as I read over here, the long-lasting development of another masterpiece from S3 Graphics (which is a part of VIA now) is coming to an end. The company is going to introduce this chip in May. We can’t yet say what will its target be. It is most likely to be used for the VIA integrated chipsets. Though the graphics card makers claim that it should be tangibly faster than GeForce2 MX400, which means that it can also get to the value graphics cards market (bearing in mind two pipelines with 2 TMUs each and 0.15micron manufacturing technology).
