Frankly speaking, I expected that after the launching of Pentium 4 2.4GHz Intel would carry out a massive price drop for all the other processors in the family. However, nothing of the kind ever happened, which means that Pentium 4 prices are kind of confusing now: the CPUs working at 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz cost the same $562 in 1,000-unit quantities.
According to Intel’s plans the next price drop should take place only on April 14 (see this news story), and after that 2.2GHz CPU will cost $423, 2AGHz will drop from $364 to $284, 1GHz – from $342 to $262 and 1.9GHz - from $241 to $225 (the cost of Pentium 4 1.8GHz and 1.7GHz will remain the same: $241 and $225 respectively). So, it turns out that it doesn’t make any sense to buy Pentium 4 2.2GHz until April 14. Though I believe that Intel is already shipping the CPUs to distributors at corrected prices.
