As we reported earlier, Intel has announced a new Xeon MP server processors today. This CPU is the first server processor based on Pentium 4 architecture, intended for the use on four-processor and even more powerful servers. Although Xeon MP is based on 0.18-micron Foster MP core and has a 256 KB L2 cache (versus 512 KB cache in normal Xeon (Prestonia)), Xeon MP provides higher performance in server tasks due to an L3-cache with a 512 KB or a 1 MB size.
New processors have 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 GHz frequencies, work with a 400-MHz bus, and support Hyper-Threading technology. Intel recommends ServerWorks GC-HE with a dual-channel DDR SDRAM and PCI-X bus, to be used as a chipset for the new Xeon MP.<%BANNER[article]%>
