Adaptec has made an odd press-release announcing a Serial ATA chip (Serial ATA ASIC) that will be manufactured in mass no sooner than in the Q’4 (!) of 2002. In this release we found price per item in over-100-piece quantities - $34.

There were also announced two mainboards – Serial ATA controller for PCI interface and a four-port Serial ATA RAID controller supporting RAID level 0, 1, 1/0 and 5 (apparently, it will be demonstrated at IDF, as we told you here). Pre-release versions of Serial ATA RAID controller will be available to order in the Q’2 of 2002.<%BANNER[article]%>

Frankly speaking, we haven’t quite got the point: why is Adaptec in such a hurry? They could easily make this announcement a quarter or two later. We suppose this standard is not that important as to start the fuss so early. Well, Adaptec decides for itself...
