In order to make their products even more attractive manufacturers usually try to add interesting features and capabilities. However, since a lot of users do not necessarily understand all the advantages of the new hardware, computer components makers try to make their products to look better in addition to faster and smarter work. Almost all devices go through this point: if the first personal computers from IBM were far from being stylish or really attractive, the latest machines are usually designed by a group of artists. Mobile phones transformed from bulky bricks to state-of-the art miniature devices in some 10 or 7 years and are now designed by leading designers from famous fashion houses. Apparently, HDDs are not an exception from the general trend and Western Digital company proved it this week.

WD unveiled a Special Edition model of its FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo external HDD that utilise unique and stylish design with LED illumination and fashionable plastic case.

Western Digital FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Special Edition external hard drive features 7200rpm motor, 8MB buffer and 250GB capacity. It can work with either USB 2.0 or FireWire (IEEE1394) what makes it suitable for using with both PCs and Macs. Complete retail kit of the devices includes 1.8m 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable, 1.8m USB 2.0-certified cable, an AC adapter with power cord, a Quick Install Guide and the HDD itself.

WD FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Special Edition external HDDs are now available at the company's online store here and initially will be available through CompUSA retail stores. Broad availability will shortly follow through Western Digital's retail partners, Internet resellers including catalog partners, and selected distributors. Manufacturer's suggested retail pricing for Western Digital's FireWire/USB 2.0 Combo Special Edition 250 GB external hard drives is $449.

Nice External Hard Drive but you'd think Western Digital would put some type of on/off switch whereby it can be turned off at times.

Nice drive, but the capacity out of the box is only 232 GB. There are two 1KB autorun files on the drive. Is it normal for 18 GB to be taken up in formatting the drive?
