Despite the ramp of Blu-ray drives, DVD burners will continue to be the leading volume product until 2012, according to analysts from IDC. There are a number of reasons for that: Blu-ray burners and writable media remain expensive, meanwhile prices of DVD optical disc drives (ODDs) and discs are getting more and more affordable.
“DVD burners will remain the bread-and-butter business for ODD vendors. Despite Blu-ray’s win over HD DVD in the format war, Blu-ray drive adoption will be limited in 2008 because of their high price and only moderate consumer interest,” said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director, Removable Storage at IDC.
Still, as the PC market’s adoption of DVD burners becomes saturated and increasingly commoditized, Blu-ray adoption will accelerate in 2009 and Blu-ray drives will become the majority of the total market value in 2012.
DVD burners continue their race to become a commodity market. Aggressive volume manufacturers will continue to drive down the price, pushing technology leaders out of the mainstream optical disc drive market.
Blu-ray disc has won the format war over HD DVD, but similar to DVD and DVD burners, Blu-ray will need a three- to five-year ramp to reach mass-market volumes. New affordable BD-ROM drives will lead the way for the BD format’s adoption and more than 100 million Blu-ray drives will ship worldwide in 2011, said IDC.

There is one 5 pack BD-R discs at my local computer store.. i believe they are 2x speed and single layer (25Gb).
The price converted is 116 USD for 125Gb of burnable disc estate. Im pretty sure you will get a 500 Gb hard drive for this price.
So please some cheaper and faster discs..

Exactly! As long as they cost an arm and a leg and take an hour to burn, few people will want them. I was hoping that things would get better much sooner than 2012 though, and that Blue Ray may become acceptable in about two years, but I guess that the laws from the CPU business don't apply here.

with dvd you didnt need to buy a new TV to go from VHS to it... that is why blu has a very big hill to climb... 480i to 480p compared to 480p to blu HDMI / HDCP / AACS / 1080P / NEW TV ... which if it isnt HDCP it will downgrade the picture back to 480p... sounds like a great idea...

Truth be told, I could easily get by with just a combo drive, I read a lot of DVDs, but when I comes to burning, a simple burnt CD works for the rare times I need to give someone of copy of something that can't be sent through Email, or when I want to make an audio CD for my car. A small flash drive takes care of day to day things.

The bluray disk format is a joke/gimmick IMHO as an HDD would be a far better median but then sony cant control what/how you watch the content
Its all about being better for sony.....................not the consumer

Its a fairly good format, 25Gb is ok.. but I would actually prefer something like a 50-100 Gb for backup purposes.. fewer discs are easier to handle.. blu-ray has taken along time to get where it is, for it to replace dvd it will take even longer.
Im just hoping we get some decent storage medium for backup and file transfer... perhaps flash drives will be the next thing... if they become cheap enough, flash drives are more intuitive to use, like a floppy or a hdd. wich is actually alot better than having to have a special program like nero just to put information on a storage disc.

alpha0ne you also have to recall that CD-R and DVD-R did cost an arm and a leg when they where first introduced.. ive just thought that the whole process would go faster now that they have done all this before with CD/DVD.
