OCZ Technology Group this week unveiled its new family of solid-state drives (SSDs) that are aimed at premium-class desktop or laptop systems. The novelties offer larger DRAM cache as well as better performance and will overshadow the company’s Vertex-series SSDs launched about half year ago.

“OCZ’s SSD lineup offers drives for the complete spectrum of applications, and the new Summit SSD’s cater to both enthusiast level consumer and enterprise customers. Making use of premium flash and a large 128MB cache, the Summit SSD delivers a combination of high speed, excellent compatibility, and superior reliability,” said Alex Mei, chief marketing officer of the OCZ Technology Group.

The new OCZ Summit family of solid state drives is based on multi-level cell flash memory, sports 128MB cache buffer and includes models with 60GB, 120GB and 250GB capacities. OCZ states read speeds of up to 220MB/s and write speeds of up to 200MB/s for its new SSDs (with the exception of 60GB version that boasts with only up to 125MB/s write speed).

The highest-end OCZ Summit 256GB drive will compete against recently released Corsair Memory’s P256 SSD that offers exactly the same specifications and performance numbers, which is probably because both solution providers acquire some of their solid-state drives from Samsung Electronics.

In addition to Summit, which is aimed at premium desktops or laptops, OCZ offers a rather broad range of SSDs aimed at different applications, including Apex-series for relatively affordable systems, Vertex family designed for performance PCs, Vertex EX targeting workstations and Z-Drive developed specifically for no-compromise enthusiast personal computers.
