Corsair Memory and OCZ Technology Group, two leading suppliers of DRAM- and flash-based computer components, recently updated Firmware on select solid-state drives (SSDs) to add so-called “Trim” function and boost performance of those SSDs under Windows 7 operating system (OS).
The Trim command in Windows 7 enables the operating system to progressively inform controllers of SSDs about previously deleted or “invalid” data from the drive's memory cells, automatically maintaining optimal performance over time. Without Trim support, SSD controllers do not know which cells are free and which are not (controllers automatically attempt to prolong SSD’s lifespan by using all cells equal amount of times) and have to make requests to operating system once all of the cells had been written once.
Corsair Memory supports Trim command with a new firmware for its Performance-series P64, P128 and P256 solid-state drives. The new firmware and firmware update tool are available immediately from Corsair's product forum.
OCZ has released a firmware upgrade for its line of Summit Series SSDs, that supports Trim command for Windows 7 users and idle garbage collection for Vista and XP users. The Summit 19C1 firmware upgrade and installation guide can be downloaded from the company’s web-site.
Earlier this year Intel Corp. added Trim support to its solid-state drives, but faced many bugs with the implementation.
