OCZ Technology Group, a leading supplier of memory and flash-based products, sees increasing demand towards solid-state drives (SSDs) despite of the high price of flash-based storage solutions.

“We are seeing a nice uptick in demand for the complete spectrum of SSDs, this continues to be our fastest growing product category. Besides the economy picking up, the maturity of SSD solutions as well as the reduction in prices are both positive factors,” said Alex Mei, executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

OCZ recently unveiled SSDs “for the masses” with prices around $100, however, the bulk of OCZ’s solid-state drive shipments is represented by premium solutions powered by advanced flash chips and controllers.

“The reason that we have seen such explosive growth is because we offer drives for the complete spectrum of applications and users, whether it is consumer or enterprise we have a solution. Our Vertex and Vertex 2-series of drives continue to be hot sellers for us, but we are selling a lot of 3.5” Colossus and Z-Drive PCI-e drives as well,” said Mr. Mei.

While SSDs are still more expensive than traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) in terms of per gigabyte cost, the are faster, which is crucial for desktops, and more reliable, when it comes to notebooks. Apparently, according to OCZ, loads of consumers have learned these two facts.

“Consumers are now familiar with SSDs and their advantages and now that the price per GB has come down, they are only more attractive. We continue to add value to our drives with special firmware’s designed for max performance and reliability,” concluded the high-ranking executive.
