Plextor, a designer of leading-edge storage devices, plans to introduce its first solid-state drives (SSDs) powered by triple-level cell (TLC, or 3bpc) NAND flash memory at the upcoming CeBIT trade-show. Plextor is primarily known for premium-class SSDs, so its TLC-powered devices should combine performance, reliability and affordability.

The new lineup of Plextor solid-state drives is expected to be based on TLC NAND flash memory with toggle DDR interface produced by Toshiba as well as Marvell 88SS9187/88SS9189 controller (based on different reports) accompanied by Plextor’s firmware with numerous proprietary features. Thanks to the latter, Plextor M8S (presumable name of TLC-based SSD) drives will not only feature the company’s TrueSpeed technology that ensures consistent performance throughout the lifetime of an SSD, but also leading-edge performance out-of-the-box.

Based on media reports, Plextor M8S TLC NAND flash-based 2.5” solid-state drives will offer up to 540MB/s sequential read speed, 465MB/s sequential write speed as well as up to 80000/72000 read/write random IOPS [input/output operations per second], respectively. The company reportedly intends to make the drives available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, according to numerous media reports.

Plextor’s TLC NAND-based SSDs will not be the world’s first and only solid-state drives to feature TLC memory, but the company will likely emphasize its TrueSpeed tech as a major trump against rivals.

Samsung 840-series SSDs are based on triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash memory with toggle DDR interface as well as the company’s proprietary MDX controller. The SSD 840 drive offers up to 97 000 read IOPS as well as sequential read speeds up to 530MB/s.

Currently it is expected that Plextor’s TLC-based SSDs (M8S) will hit the market in the second half of the year. The M8S name presumes that the solid-state drives will belong to Plextor's next-generation affordable SSD family. Presumably, this means that the new low-cost SSDs from Plextor will be priced below those available today.

Plextor did not comment on the news-story.

I ain't yet convinced that TLC is as reliable is MLC. Time will tell if TLC is actually a better choice.
