OCZ Technology Group, a leading maker of solid-state drives for PCs and enterprises, is reportedly working on Vertex 5 solid-state drives that will be powered by Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller as well as inexpensive NAND flash memory. The new drives are projected to offer high performance at relatively affordable price-point.

OCZ Vertex 5 SSDs will be powered by NAND flash memory made using 20nm-class process technology as well as Indilinx Barefoot 3 controller, reports Nordic Hardware web-site. The SSDs will be positioned between the current Vertex 4 and Vector solid-state drives, it will be faster than Vertex 4, but less expensive than Vector SSDs.

The MLC NAND flash memory produced on 20nm node is cheaper than MLC NAND with synchronous interface made using 25nm process technology, which is used in OCZ Vector solid-state drives.

The Vector SSD series is available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities, and delivers read bandwidth of up to 550MB/s, write bandwidth of up to 530MB/s, random read performance of up to 100 000 IOPS. Vertex 4 SSDs offers up to 550MB/s read speed, up to 475MB/s write speed and up to 120 000 IOPS. Target specs of Vertex 5 are unclear.

It is expected that OCZ Vertex 5 will become available in May in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities. It is unclear whether the company will also offer a 64GB version of Vertex 4.

OCZ has reportedly confirmed development of a new Barefoot 3-based SSD featuring NAND flash memory made using 20nm-class manufacturing technology. Given the fact that OCZ has numerous products powered by Barefoot 3 in the pipeline, it is unknown whether the company confirmed performance-mainstream Vertex 5 or relatively affordable Agility 5 powered by TLC NAND flash memory.
