Western Digital Corp. claims that despite of rapidly growing popularity of solid-state drives, total available market (TAM) of hard disk drives (HDDs) has not been affected by SSDs. In fact, the decrease of HDD TAM is mostly conditioned by slow PC sales as well as reduced production of hard drives due to lower production capacities after Thailand flooding in 2011.

“[Hard drive TAM] is obviously down, it is down from 170 million pre-flood to 135 million this past quarter. Clearly, we have been impacted in that regard by lower PC sales. But it is not because of SSD replacements within PCs. In fact, we have actually seen that pure SSD as an alternative for hard drives has not changed significantly from what we expected or from what we have seen historically. Now you are seeing dual-drive configurations where you have got SSD in a hard drive. We are agnostic to that,” said Stephen Milligan, chief executive officer and president of Western Digital, during quarterly conference call with financial analysts.

The amount of notebooks with solid-state drives is clearly growing. Last year Apple transited virtually all of its notebooks to solid-state storage and other leading PC makers (e.g., Lenovo Group) are also only offering premium PCs with SSDs. But it looks like WD does not care about four million of Macs and several millions of ThinkPads. What Western Digital cares about are media tablets that are stealing the market from PCs.

“The issue is that there are competing devices, for example, tablets, that are more compelling to customers that they are buying instead of PCs. So, if you go back to the 5mm HDD story or the hybrid story, what we are trying to do as a company is provide a more compelling storage alternative in a thin and light package that our customers can work around, design more compelling products to have them buy a PC or a PC-like ultraportable device and versus a tablet,” stressed Mr. Milligan.

Western Digital also sells solid-state drives for certain markets, but never discloses actual shipment numbers. Meanwhile, the numbers of SSDs sold quarterly are getting significant: Micron Technology, a leading, but not the biggest supplier of SSDs, shipped 1.3 million solid-state drives during the second quarter of fiscal 2013 (ended February 28, 2013) alone. Nowadays there are tens of large SSD suppliers, including big names like Samsung, Toshiba, Intel, OCZ, Corsair and many other.
