Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest maker of NAND flash memory and a leading maker of solid-state drives, on Tuesday unveiled its second-generation high-end consumer SSD based on its second-generation three-dimensional (3D) vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory. The new drives offer very high performance and reliability.

The Samsung 850 Pro will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage capacities. The new family of SSDs delivers blazing-fast speeds and exceptional endurance, offering the highest level of performance among SSDs using the Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface. Its sequential read performance reaches up to 550MB/s, with write performance of up to 520MB/s. Random read performance is up to 100 000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90 000 IOPS. The drive also offers a Dynamic Thermal Guard feature, which maintains ambient temperature while operating and prevents potential data loss from overheating. Samsung’s SSDs based on V-NAND memory are based on the company’s own controller.

Samsung's V-NAND-based SSDs are built to handle an 80GB daily workload, which equates to 150TB written (TBW) throughout its lifespan. The new drives come with the industry's top-level ten-year limited warranty.

Vertical NAND (V-NAND) memory stacks memory cells vertically and uses a charge trap flash architecture. Multiple layers allow larger areal bit densities without requiring smaller individual cells, which positively affects endurance of each memory cell. Samsung uses 42nm process technology to make its V-NAND flash memory, which is why these chips can handle significantly higher amount of program-erase cycles compared to modern MLC [multi-level cell] NAND flash memory made using 16nm, 19nm or 20nm-class process technologies. According to Samsung itself, the second-generation 32-layer 3D V-NAND delivers up to two times the density and write speed when compared with traditional 20 nm planar NAND flash.

“With the new 850 PRO V-NAND SSD, Samsung is introducing the next major evolution of SSD technology, taking the lead in delivering high-density SSDs with outstanding endurance, performance and energy efficiency,” said Unsoo Kim, senior vice president of branded product marketing team at Samsung Electronics. “We are fully committed to establishing an innovative computing environment by providing customers with leading-edge V-NAND SSDs with unrivaled performance.”

Samsung 850 Pro SSDs will be available globally across 53 markets from this month.

According Gartner, the global SSD market is expected to rapidly increase from $11.04 billion in revenues in 2013 to approximately $14.47 billion in 2014 and $23.54 billion in 2017.
