HGST Extends HDD Lineup With 250GB Serial ATA-150 Drive

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies today announced a new Serial ATA-150 desktop hard disk drive. The 3.5” Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 uses 80GB+ per platter technology to deliver up to 250GB (1/4 of terabyte) of storage capacity.

The new Deskstar 7K250 is well-suited for use in ATA RAID and other data-intensive environments, such as network-attached storage, PC gaming and digital video recording and editing. The hard drive’s 250GB of storage capacity also provides a simple and cost effective alternative to tape for disk-to-disk backup and data recovery.

Technical Specifications of Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K250 look as follows:

• Capacity: 250/160/120/80/40GB;
• 757Mb/s maximal media data rate;
• 8.5ms/8.5ms/8.8ms average seek time;
• 7200rpm, 4.17 ms average latency;
• ATA-100/Serial ATA-150 Interfaces;
• 25.4mm in height;
• 62.3 billion bits per square inch maximum areal density;
• 3/2/1 aluminum platter(s);
• 6/4/3/2/1 GMR recording head(s);
• 350G (2ms) non-operating shock (one and two-disk models);
• 300G (2ms) non-operating shock (three-disk models);
• 7/5.9/5W idle power (Parallel ATA);
• 7.6/6.5/5.6W idle power (Serial ATA);

Hitachi is currently shipping Deskstar 7K250 drives that use a Parallel ATA interface and expects to ship Serial ATA-150 drives in production by the end of June. Pricing may vary.
