PNY Technologies, a supplier of graphics cards and memory products, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment said on Wednesday said that they would pre-load Ghostbusters movie on 2GB flash drives to boost their popularity among end-users. While the movie is twenty five years old, many consumers would appreciate such a bonus.
“As a market leader in the USB market, PNY’s focus is to offer consumers added value by providing enjoyable blockbuster content on their USB,” said Stefanie Summerfield, UK and Nordic sales and marketing director for PNY Technologies.
PNY will pre-load Ghostbusters movie onto Attaché 2GB USB flash drives. PNY and Sony did not reveal in what format the Ghostbusters movie will be stored onto the flash drive. Initially, the new flash drives will be available only in Argos stores in the United Kingdom for £29.99 ($53), substantially more than a typical price of a 2GB USB drive. It is unclear whether the new version of the drive will cost significantly more than $14.99, the price of an empty Attaché 2GB in the USA, and whether the products will actually be on sale outside the UK.
This is the first time when a movie is distributed on a flash drive by a supplier of USB drives, not a studio itself. However, if such a way of movie distribution becomes a trend, this may turn-out as an interesting option for those, who watch movies on the go. Obviously, it is hard to expect premium quality of Ghostbusters movie on a flash drive, but it should be enough for typical monitors of notebooks or desktops.
“Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is delighted to partner with PNY to offer the first full length movie preloaded on a USB flash drive and ready to play on your PC/laptop. We are committed to giving the consumer more choice in how to experience their movies either at home or on the go,” said Andy Armstrong, UK managing director for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
