Seagate Technology on Tuesday unveiled new platter technology that will enable multi-terabyte hard disk drives (HDDs) of different form-factors. Potentially, 1TB platters allow Seagate to manufacture desktop hard drives with capacities of 4TB or even 5TB.
Seagate's new 3.5" platters have areal density of 625Gb/s per square inch, which means that the company can fit 1TB of data onto just one platter, a new record for the magnetic recording industry. 1TB platters allow to make relatively inexpensive 2TB and 3TB hard drives as well as to create HDDs with 4TB and 5TB capacities.
Seagate’s GoFlex external hard disk with USB 3.0 is the first to feature the new Seagate's 3TB hard drive. Seagate is on track to ship its flagship 3.5" Barracuda desktop hard drive with 3TBs of storage on 3 disk platters to the distribution channel in mid-2011. The drive will also be available in capacities of 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB. Drives with 4TB capacities are in the works, but Seagate did not reveal when they become available.
Samsung Electronics, which hard drive business is about to become Seagate's, demonstrated the one of the first drives based on the sixth-generation PMR platters with ~630Gb/inch2 areal density or higher. The drive belonged to Spinpoint EcoGreen F6 family of hard drives and had 5200rpm spindle speed. The HDD used Serial ATA-600 interface and has 32MB of cache.
HDDs based on latest-gen PMR platters are already available; for example, single-platter Hitachi Travelstar Z5K500 500GB 2.5" drive has been shipping for some time now; hence, the technology for 4TB desktop HDDs is here.
“Organizations of all sizes and consumers worldwide are amassing digital content at light speed, generating immense demand for storage of digital content of every imaginable kind. We remain keenly focused on delivering the storage capacity, speed and manageability our customers need to thrive in an increasingly digital world," said Rocky Pimentel, executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing and Seagate.
GoFlex Desk external drives are compatible with both the Windows operating system and Mac computers. Each drive includes an NTFS driver for Mac, which allows the drive to store and access files from both Windows and Mac OS X computers without reformatting. The GoFlex Desk external drive’s sleek black 3.5" design sits either vertically or horizontally to accommodate any desktop environment.
In late 2010 an analyst predicted availability of 4TB desktop hard drives based on 1TB platters this calendar year. However, some believe that certain companies will introduce 4TB drives based on five platters in order to avoid usage of newer technology.
