Mushkin, a leading supplier of premium PC components and peripherals, this week demonstrated the industry’s highest-performing USB flash drives. The memory sticks more resemble solid-state drives as they utilize high-end LSI SandForce controllers and feature all the benefits that SSDs have to offer. Obviously, solid-state drives like these are pretty expensive.

Mushkin USB Thunder USB flash drives on a USB 3.0 to Serial ATA-6Gb/s bridge, LSI SandForce SF-2281 SSD controller as well as Micron NAND flash memory. The first Mushkin Thunder will have 240GB capacity and will be able to provide up to 380MB/s read/write speed, an unbelievable level of performance for a USB 3.0 drive.

While Mushkin has not yet revealed official price of the USB Thunder flash drives, the company expects to sell the product for around $1 per 1GB, hence, the first model should cost around $240. Still, performance advantages that Mushkin’s Thunder will provide will justify the price.

The manufacturer expects to start sales of the world’s fastest USB flash memory sticks in February, 2013.
