Since the NV35 is nearly in retail now and we know almost everything about the part, it is time to start reporting unofficial information about NVIDIA’s next-generation graphics processor, the code-named NV40 GPU. Apparently, we even have some facts to report about the upcoming graphics chip since another unnamed representative from NVIDIA told a couple of things about the upcoming product to this web-site during AMD Tech Tour 2003.

An NVIDIA official admitted that the NV30 was a big failure for the company, but the firm is still on track with its 6 months product cycle and six month after NV35 the corporation will announce another GPU, the code-named NV40. The representative from the Santa Clara, California-based company said the NV40 would be twice as fast as the NV35 and would feature entirely new architecture.

Besides, the official claimed NVIDIA “The Way It Meant To Be Played” strategy to have two ramifications. Firstly, all participating game developers should use only NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics cards when designing games; secondly, many games would have certain features that only NVIDIA GPUs would be able to take advantage of.

Additionally, it was said that NVIDIA nForce3-based mainboards would come in July and that machines featuring NVIDIA nForce3, AMD Opteron processor and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 graphics card are ideal for gaming.

When do you think NVIDIA NV40 will be announced? I suggest that roughly a year after the NV30 at Comdex Fall 2003 in November. The graphics cards itself will in this case come either in very late December or in early 2004. Note that in the second quarter next year Intel rolls out its Grantsdale platform with PCI Express-based connection for graphics cards, so, it is logical to assume that either NVIDIA NV40 already features PCI Express or NVIDIA will release another NV40 architecture GPU with the support for new bus in the second quarter 2004. And that may be already the NV45, coming out six months after the NV40 in mid-2004, I assume.

And what do we know about ATI R400, or R420 products?

Its going to be twice as fast I suspect because it will use an 8x2 system, which fits the 128 bit architecture better, as well as a probably enchanced 256bit memory interface, since, again I suspect the current 5900 256bit interface was put on with little enhancement to save the core product when the 5800 didn't work so well.

All guesses but I don't think they are far off the mark.

Maybe the next couple generations of cards will get progressively slower as gamers invest their hard earned cash in smell-O-vision! Just as likely to come true as the base-less guesswork that's "news" on this web site. The Register is less tabloid people!

great, games with features that only nvidia could take advantage of. must be a 3dfx feature.

*note

do not hire 3dfx engineers

I am definitely sure that real performace by hardware will be improved by 10%-20%. Their cheating driver is the best cheatin tweak skill in the world

The hype behind launching of another Nvidia producit has now lost its credibility. ATI is now up and kicking with its R300 masterpiece and they will not be sitting and basking in the glory, they will come up with something neat in near future and mind it without the HYPE. And again Nvidia will be found napping. Massage to Nvidia "Glory days are over".

You mean ATI's short-lived glory days are over.

Face it, ATI is going to bite the dust, sooner or later.........

Remember the rise if Nvidia and how it engulfed 3dfx? Same might just happen this time it may be Nvidia who knows? 5900 is now out, people should just go and buy $500 card to help Nvidia's cause.

twice the performance...its about time...16MB embedded DRAM with bandwidth in the hundreds of GB's...sounds yummy, although one feature that is up in the air is 512MB of DDR 2..this makes me nervous considering we dont even scratch the surface of the 256Mb we currently have...oh well who cares, my next system will no doubt have the nv40 along with the athlon 64 based on the san diego core..can't wait until april
