ASUSTeK Computer, one of the world’s largest makers of computer components, is reportedly preparing a dual-chip graphics card powered by NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 GT visual processing units (VPUs). The product is likely to become the world’s highest-performing single-card graphics solution.

According to ComputerBase and HardSpell.com web-sites, ASUS has developed a dual-VPU graphics card powered by the GeForce 7800 GT graphics processing units (GPUs) and is nearly ready to release it commercially. The product is based on a similar, but not the same, large print circuit board (PCB) that was used for dual-GeForce 6800-series solutions that never came to the market. Such a huge graphics card may not fit into a lot of computer chassis with moderate size.

Each of the GeForce 7800 GT graphics chips on the graphics card is equipped with 256MB of 1.6ns GDDR3 memory. Default speed settings for the GeForce 7800 GT are 400MHz for the GPU and 1000MHz for memory.

NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 GT graphics chip features 20 pixel and 7 vertex processors enabled. By contrast, its more powerful predecessor – NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX – comes with G70 chip that features 24 and 8 pixel and vertex pipelines respectively. Less powerful GeForce 6800 GT and Ultra products only have 16 pixel and 6 vertex processors.

Pricing of the final dual-chip GeForce 7800 GT from ASUS is unknown.

ASUS’ representatives did not comment on the news-story.
