| Date: 02/02/06 11:57:43 AM]Nvidia Corp. and its add-in cards partners on Thursday unveiled the first GeForce 7800-series graphics chip for previous-generation systems featuring accelerated graphics port (AGP) bus. Executives at some online stores have praised the new product claiming that has been demanded by gamers for some time.
“PC gaming enthusiasts with tricked-out AGP systems have a lot invested in their computers so the new GeForce 7800 GS AGP GPU will allow them to extend the life of their systems, and keep their PCs on the bleeding edge,” said Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop graphics processing units (GPUs) at Nvidia.
Nvidia’s GeForce 7800 GS graphics card is based on the well-known G70 processor that powers all the latest GeForce 7800-series graphics cards starting from the GeForce 7800 GT and ending with the top-of-the-range GeForce 7800 GTX 512. The chip flavour that powers the GeForce 7800 GS has a cut-down specification compared to the parts unveiled before: it has 16 pixel processors, 6 vertex processors and 375MHz clock-speed as compared to 20 pixel processors, 7 vertex processor and 400MHz clock-speed of the GeForce 7800 GT. Nevertheless, the 7800 GS graphics cards will be equipped with 1200MHz memory, up from 1000MHz on the 7800 GT product.
The new GeForce 7800 GS AGP should succeed the GeForce 6800 Ultra on the market and compete with ATI’s Radeon X850 XT for the AGP bus.
“Customers with fast AGP systems are an ideal target market for an upgrade to a powerful graphics processor such as the GeForce 7800 GS AGP,” said Howard Tong, vice president at Newegg.com . “We are thrilled to have this product, because quite frankly, a GeForce 7800 GPU on an AGP-based add-in card is what a lot of gamers have been asking for”.
The actual graphics cards based on the GeForce 7800 GS AGP GPUs will be available shortly from plethora of Nvidia’s partners, including AOpen, Asus, BFG Technologies, Club 3D, Evga Corp., Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, Pine, PNY Technologies, Point of View, Sparkle, and XFX.
Nvidia’s Ujesh Desai said during a press conference recently that retail price of the GeForce 7800 GS AGP will be $349, while the online pricing should be about $299.
