John Carmack, the lead programmer of id Software and the man behind popular Doom and Quake titles, said he would not like to jump to DirectX 10 hardware, but would rather concentrate on his primary development platform – the Xbox 360 game console.

“Personally, I wouldn’t jump at something like DX10 right now. I would let things settle out a little bit and wait until there’s a really strong need for it,” Mr. Carmack said in an interview with Game Informer Magazine.

This is not the first time when Mr. Carmack takes Microsoft Xbox 360 side, as it is easier to develop new games for the consoles. Mr. Carmack said that graphics cards drivers have been a big headache for him and it became more complicated to determine real performance of application because of multiply “layers of abstraction on the PC”. The lead programmer of id Software called Xbox 360’s more direct approach “refreshing” and even praised Microsoft’s development environment “as easily the best of any of the consoles, thanks to the company's background as a software provider”.

“I especially like the work I’m doing on the [Xbox] 360, and it’s probably the best graphics API as far as a sensibly designed thing that I’ve worked with,” he said.

While from commercial perspective reluctance to develop for the latest DirectX 10 hardware – which is currently not available widely – may be considered as logical, from the technology standpoint stagnation may transform into creation of game titles that are outdated on arrival. The vast majority of graphics cards installed inside gamers’ personal computers are compatible with DirectX 9, and Xbox 360’s application programming interface has similar feature-set.

But while it may be dangerous to rely next-generation titles on current generation hardware, visually advanced games may not necessarily become the most popular too. For instance, Far Cry game was objectively more visually attractive than Doom III or Half-Life 2, but the latter two were far more popular.

He started out coding in DOS, having direct access to the complete hardware. He probably misses this approach to game programming a lot. I don't doubt he honestly is more enthusiastic about xbox360 programming, beacuse of some similarity with the way things are done on it, and how things were done in the old days.

I too am concerned John Carmack will make outdated games.

WTH?!

And it is this attitude that brought us the most hyped and most disappointing game of all time; Doom 3.

He probably doesn't care much about DX10 because OpenGL has most of the advantages DX10 gives over DX9.

This is not news at all. DirectX 10 can't even be used in Mac OS and in Linux!
This guy make games for these two platforms as well, and he likes the idea of OpenGL better than that of DirectX.

This guy is also entitled to his opinion.
They way he likes to program doesn't get well together with DirectX.

who the fuck cares what this guy thinks. Just as long as he produces innovative game engines that work...

I doubt that Mr.Shilov have read the article at all.
Carmack said that "he would not jump on DX10 " when he he was questioned about buying a gaiming rig!!
I was meant from consumer's point of view, not developer's!!!!
He only said that he was not pushed to use DX10 because DX9 is a very good API, there he mentioned xbox360, because it uses DX9 as well !
He said nowhere in the interview that xbox360 is his primary platform!! Quite opposite, he said that PC is still probably ID's favourite platform!! He wasn't even comparing PC vs xbox!!!

I want to add that Shilov is a bit off the point on this one. What Carmack suggests is that current and immediate future game releases won't benefit much from DX10, it's just a marketing hype Vista only feature. In case of Halo 2 this is quite obvious, the game looks worse than even Far Cry... Only Crysis might give a positive answer if we should expect something really better with DX10 over DX9 in 2007 since it supports both modes.
The second point I disagree with is Far Cry's comparison to the orther two FPS games. FC is older than Doom 3 and Half Life 2, has -even now- the best outdoor visuals, but can't match the indoor lighting visuals of Doom3 or the physics of HL2. Moreover Far Cry was not an uber famous franchise as the other two, but it managed to break into such status and pave the way towards Crysis. So each of these 3 games had its strengths and weaknesses and I still consider Far Cry one of the best FPS ever.
