The world’s largest supplier of discrete graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia Corp., on Wednesday said it would start to sell its new high-end graphics product by the 15th of May at unprecedented cost of $829 per graphics card. Even though the release allows Nvidia to claim the world’s fastest graphics card, its price may keep the vast majority of end-users away from it.

Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra comes with 128 stream processors, 32 texture mapping units, 24 raster operation units and 384-bit memory bus. The “base” clock-speed of the processor is 612MHz, a 6% increase over previous flagship offering, while the 128 unified shader processors operate at 1500MHz, which is 11% higher compared to the GeForce 8800 GTX. Nvidia equips the GeForce 8800 Ultra with 768MB of GDDR3 memory at 2160MHz, a 20% memory bandwidth boost compared to the predecessor. The GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics cards will use new “A3” revision of the G80 graphics processor, which is believed to have high overclocking potential.

“The graphics industry evolves extremely quickly and it is quite an achievement when you can leapfrog your own performance milestones in succession like we have done with these GeForce 8 Series GPUs,” said Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop graphics processors at Nvidia.

According to Nvidia itself, performance advantage that the GeForce 8800 Ultra has compared to its predecessor, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX, is between 10% and 15%. According to X-bit labs’ performance preview of emulated GeForce 8800 Ultra, the newcomer has 2% - 14% performance increase compared to the slower model. Nvidia claims that in some applications the 8800 Ultra may be 27% faster than the 8800 GTX.

The new GeForce 8800 Ultra product is fully compatible with DirectX 10 and features the same list of capabilities as other GeForce 8800-series graphics cards, including PureVideo HD, coverage sampling antialiasing and so on.

Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra-based graphics cards will be available at e-tailers and retailers worldwide by May 15th. Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra graphics card launch partners include Asustek Computer, BFG, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, PNY, Point of View, Sparkle and XFX. Prices range from $829 in the U.S. and higher. In France the board will cost €829 (approximately $1127) and higher, whereas in Germany it will be priced at €699 (approximately $950) and higher. Official price in the UK and other countries is currently unclear, but Overclockers.co.uk online store offers to pre-order one GeForce 8800 Ultra board for £528.74 (approximately $1051) with taxes included.

To date, the highest manufacturer suggested retail price for an advanced graphics card has been $649. Given that the GeForce 8800 GTX still has MSRP of $599 - $649, it is unclear why Nvidia increased the price by 33% amid 10% - 15% performance boost. It also remains to be seen whether end-users will really buy a significant amount of graphics cards at the price of an office personal computer.

DEAR ANTON...My cusin is an NVIDIA engineer (and I'll be too in 3 months) and he provided me with the data regarding the 8950GX2 and 8800 Ultra..since then final specs & pricing have CHANGED due to yield issues!!
Even at NVIDIA you can never know the product specs until very late development stages..they are trying work on low profile.
NVIDIA is now working at full speed to release additional members in the GeForce 8 family of products..It is not up to me..I'm just sharing what I'm given..sorry..info has to be updated from time to time...AS for the HD 2900 XT performance it was ATI who admited that it wont be able to compete with the 8800 GTX..and have peformance on par with the 8800 GTS..Look at Fudzilla.com for that scoop!! also the benches at DailyTech an others seem to prove it !!! 8800 GTX is from 30-50% faster then HD 2900 XT-period!! and even the 2900 XTX wont save the day for AMD/ATI..Get Updated..sorry..and one last thing .Why do you think ATI is releasing the 2900 XT at 399 USD!? because it is on the looser side..and yes I'm an nVIDIA fan..Because My family has stocks at nVIDIA..and I have family members working in NVIDIA as engineers and I'm going to be an NVIDIA engineer aswell in 3 months from now..ans yes I agree with you that the 8800 Ultra is overpriced and not worth its expensive price tag..but this is how it is when there's no competition form ATI-price will be higher..it is not NVIDIA to blame it is ATI to blame!! Good Day

It looks like Nvidia is just trying to see how many suckers out there will pony up for an $800 graphic toy. I suspect anyone who would is depending on CRACK sales to fund their graphic card addiction. No one with a cue would touch an $800 Vid card.

Yeah. It's the "I Have it because It's Cool" Factor plays a role here. Just like the way people are willing to buy a 600 USD Videogame Console to prove that it's cool to have it because it's so Expensive.

This is obvious blatant suckering. The Performance Increase does in no way Justify the price Difference. Infortunately a little bit too much people either don't posses Rational Thinking or just refuse to use it. Because of this there is always a Market for "Elite" stuff like this.

Anyway just make sure it's not your money they sucker you into paying.

I love nvidia, I love ATI, and there's no way that I want either of them to go bust as Erik clearly does since if they did we'd all be paying far too much for graphics cards. Nvidia have a comfortable lead atm, and look what they've done with the Ultra pricing... Come on Erik, where are your credentials? Are you really an electrical engineer from Stokholm (google)? or is this you?

oh and btw - does anyone know if a CPU manufacturer (presumably intel) has bought Nvidia? Given that GPU's are looking to be integrated into CPU's in the future won't that mean bad news for Nvidia if they prove to be better than a periferal? Sorry for double post :P
