Nvidia Corp., the world’s largest designer of discrete graphics processing units (GPUs), reportedly plans to update its lineup of expensive graphics cards with at least two new offerings later in the quarter. The most powerful of the novelties will carry two graphics chips, whereas another will feature single-chip designs.

The new top-of-the-range graphics card by Nvidia is called GeForce 9800 GX2 which is based on two yet unknown 65nm graphics chips with 128 unified shader processors inside. The board, according to [H]ard|OCP web-site, will be 30% faster compared to Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra and will enable 4-way multi-GPU configurations. The novelty will have 256 stream processors in total, but will rely on driver support to demonstrate its potential, just like any multi-GPU solutions.

The least expensive solution – Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX – is projected to be released in late February or early March and is claimed to be based on one GPU. The new model 9800 GTX will replace existing GeForce 8800 GTX, thus, should offer performance on par with GeForce 8800 Ultra and support 3-way SLI configuration. In addition, there will be a the least expensive version of GeForce 9-series called GeForce 9800 GT and due in March or April.

Based on information reported earlier, Nvidia GeForce 9800-series graphics processors will support DirectX 10.1 feature-set along with powerful video encoding engine and post-processor.

Even though the new GeForce 9800 GX2 is projected to offer performance only 30% higher compared to Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra, whereas the new GeForce 9800 GTX should outperform the 8800 GTX by a similar margin, the new lineup represents a great threat to ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2.

At present Nvidia sells GeForce 8800 Ultra for $849 in retail, whereas the GeForce 8800 GTX costs about $549 - $649. Provided that the new solution by graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices offers performance of the GeForce 8800 Ultra, AMD’s new dual-chip graphics card will have to cost the same amount of money as the new GeForce 9800 GTX. Unfortunately, dual-chip configurations offer performance advantages over a single-chip ATI Radeon HD 3870 only in cases when its driver can take advantage of multi-GPU ATI CrossFireX technology. Therefore, in all other cases the GeForce 9800 GTX will be faster compared to ATI’s dual-chip solution, making it very hard for ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 to finds its place on the market.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

I'd buy a nvidia 9800 only for its name ...

So, which is the least expensive??? :)

This sounds bad! Then again ATI could pull out the drivers and make the 9800 look bad!

I didn't think they would go with 9xxx names since ATi is the first one to use 9xxx in its graphic lineup.
Good job to nVidia though

Was I right or what?
Based on the same architecture and in soso performance increase were the words I howled upon thou deaf ears but no one heed my words of wisdom.
At least AMD has a good chance of remaining competitive this time around.

Disappointing IMO that the new cards are barely any better then what is already available =\ but yeah no surprise considering the situation.

1 big danger here for NV, is that the R680 runs on crossfire which scales MUCH better then SLI currently does... This means, don't be surprised if the R680 is just about as powerful as the 9800 GX2 in most games. In my opinion, NV is giving ATI too much slack here. If the R680 is much cheaper, yet performs nearly the same, this could really backfire on NV (which would be a good thing, as we need ATI\AMD to survive lol). Here is how multi GPU's work today---

8800GT beats 3870HD-- by a good bit
2x 8800GT looses to 2x 3870-- but it's close!
Again, due to how SLI and X-Fire scale, don't rule out the R680 yet people!

Sigh...... I guess I'll just have to pickup a 3870 or 8800GT until some real new tech comes along... The super high prices on these cards is not for me especially since they are only marginally better.

Also---The 9800GT? Do they mean perhaps the 9600GT which isn't looking too terribly hot, based on what is currently known, it sounds like it'll perform about the same as a 8800GT or less.
Why bother with a 9800GT?.... based on how the 9800GTX performs like a 8800Ultra, wouldn't that mean the 8800GT, which should be less powerful, would be well.... Darn near identical performance to the 8800GT? Fleecing the people, it has begun =-0

Then again..... All this information could be way off, and the 9800GTX might actually have 30% more power then a 8800ULTRA, and the GX2 might actually have 60% more power! However that is unlikely now.

And....The Price will high rocket not worth to buy just for playing crysis in decent fps...

8.
If it plays crysis very well at max settings and other games that will be out in the future which would be on par with crysis later on. Then i'll just wait for the 10800GTX or whatever they call it to come out and get two of those. Just to be sure. along with a 8 or 16 core processor computer and 8 gigs of ram. when do you think directx 11 will be out?

9.
What is going on? Is 30% performance increase all we get in the next generation? This is ridiculous! At this rate it will take 2 more years to get a single GPU running Crysis smoothly at very high settings at 1920x1080.

NICE. So they are saying the 9800GTX will be slower than 2 G92 cards 9800GX2, that sucks.

The graphics cards from ATI have far better architectur then thus from nVIDIA but developers dosent take advantage from ATI's GPUs superiority. For exemple a 3850 can run crysis faster then an 8800GT if you change some things in the game files.

Um, ATi Radeon 9800 anyone? Did nVIDIA do a brain fart and forget about previous naming conventions? GeForce 9800?

What's next? An ATi Radeon 5800? This version with a new and improved turbo blower fan?

These companies need to get a clue.

/me bets 9800GT2 is just 2*8800GTS 512mb underclocked to keep power usage down, and 9800GTX is just an 8800GTX @ 65nm with higher core clocks and faster memory.

Nothing interesting is going to happen till the second half of the year when the real next gen parts arrive.

The 9800 GX2 might have 30% higher performance if a SLI profile is available but what is its preformance when it doesnt have that profile ?

The 9800Gx2 specs dont look too hot to be honest. Considering that this card's power will depend on the drivers and the SLI optimizions in current game engines.

But I wouldnt say the card is crap yet, we dont know how the clocks are gonna be
Most of you would say its a down clocked 8800GTS considering theres 2 cards that create a lot of heat, but do not forget they are now produced in 65nm wich makes a BIG difference. (look at Intel and their Core 2, same story there)

So the clocks could be a lot higher than the 8800 Ultra actually. Also dont forget about the shader clock wich has even a bigger effect on the performance than the GPU clock! If they boost that thing up to 2000mhz (wich would be possible considering the 65nm shrink) you would get a hell of a perfromance there!

The only thing that bothers me is the memory. 256bit interface is a bit lame in my opinion, especialy if you keep in mind that 256bit interface has been used since GeForce 5! Make it 512bit already!
Its really time to upgrade to GDDR4 memory with 512bit!

Want something to boggle your minds. There is an end where you get to a point where you can only put some many processors together before you get a problem with heat. Heat is naturally everyones enemy and transfers into power consumption. One of these days probably before 2015 there is gonna be a point where you cant make the transistors any smaller and you cant put anymore transistors on top of each other. At this point you will probably render anything in the seconds range 3-5 secs. So there is an end of the road. At this point there will be no point in upgrading because why upgrade from 5 seconds of rendering to 3 seconds. Doesnt make sense. But wait a transistor now has a binary function of 0 or 1 and there are millions of them on a die. Now imagine if all those transistors had a binary of 1 or 16,423 that means 16,423 x 16,423 instructions per transistor. Holy shit batman we can now render everything and process everything in 1 sec.... wow... Lmao... its true Motorola has a processor that can do this right now that is the future. in about 7 years all this madness will be over.... upgrading and more upgrading.
