ATI, graphics product group of Advanced Micro Devices, reportedly aims to release its next-generation code-named R700-series graphics processing units (GPUs) in mid-2008. The news comes as a surprise, as earlier it was revealed that the ATI R700-series chips are only due either in late 2008 or early in 2009.

According to a news-story by Chinese news-paper Commercial Times (which article was partly translated by DigiTimes web-site), AMD’s code-named ATI RV770 GPU is due to be commercially released in late Q2 2008. Two of such chips are projected to power AMD’s new high-performance ATI R700 graphics card.

The new graphics solutions, which official name is likely to be ATI Radeon HD 4000, are expected to feature new architecture, which will be more efficient compared to current ATI R700-series.

The first ATI RV770 chips have been reportedly delivered to graphics cards makers, however, there is no information regarding performance or feature-set of the new series of graphics products. The new family of ATI’s GPUs is expected to boost competitive positions of AMD on the market and help to fight back the lost market share from Nvidia Corp.

AMD did not comment on the news-story.

AMD is on track. WHAT A SUPRISE!!!

And I wonder how many people are going to confuse this with older nvidia graphics and order a geforce 4600 to run crysis with.

With the innumerable delays and setbacks that AMD has suffered on the CPU side since the debut of Intel's Core 2 Duo architecture, any news that even remotely suggests a headway albeit on the GPU side such as a new graphics architecture launch is welcome news.

The only way out of AMD's present woes is to move everything forward as quickly as resources will permit.

The Spider platform has somehow counterbalanced Phenom's performance deficit With the HD 3850 and 3870, the ATI graphics group has narrowed the gap but it stilll needs an Nvidia beater. The HD 4000 might be it. A win on any front is always a win and should serve to fire up the rest of AMD to relive the glory days of the Athlon.

for me it's not a suprice, as the rumers that intended to make R700 launch in early 2009 was just a misread, the thing that will launch in early 2009 is only the platform that will feature R700, that slide or anoy other slide didn't mention any thing about delay of R700...

some peples and sadly a lot of websites just saw that the early 2009 platform will feature R700 then they decided that this is a confirmation that R700 will be delayed !!

"more efficient compared to current ATI R700-series"

...shouldn't that be "compared to current ATI R600-series"?
