Nvidia Corp., the world’s largest provider of discrete graphics processors, said at a press conference that it plans to launch its next-generation graphics processor this Summer. The new product code-named GT200 is projected to dethrone the current flagship GeForce 9800 GX2, but it is not clear whether it will also bring new features.

The new graphics processing unit (GPU) for high-end market from Nvidia is projected to consist of about one billion of transistors and feature “around” 200 unified shader processors (more likely to be 192 or 240), reports Golem.de web-site citing Jeff Brown, general manager of the professional solutions group at Nvidia. It is unclear whether Nvidia GT200 sports DirectX 10.1 feature-set or are compatible with DirectX 10 only.

Nvidia’s latest high-end GPUs, which are code-named G92 and G80, consist of 754 and 681 million of transistors, respectively. The previous-generation high-end DirectX 9 graphics chips – G70 and G71 – featured 304 and 278 million of transistors, which means that the current generation high-end chips are more than two times larger compared to predecessors in terms of transistor count. Considering these facts, one billion of transistors inside GT200 is not a surprise.

The new-generation Nvidia GT200 is projected to be released in Summer and Nvidia will start to brief the media about the product starting from May, the web-site reports without providing any additional details.

It is also not known whether Nvidia plans to continue using the GeForce brand-name for GT200, or intends to introduce a new trademark.

This plus the PhysX compatibility announcement are great news for Nvidia. They need as much as they can to grab attention away from Intel. I really hope ATI's RV770 will be competitive as well though. Both companies need to be strong against Intel's coming threat.

I have an idea for their new trademark. Since GeForce is a moniker for g-force; what about Inertia series. You know, to stay withing the physics theme. Or wait, what about Acceleration, Vectors, or even Momentum!

(I am trying to say this in a slight sarcastic tone)

Anyway, I would like to see their GT200 be something worth buying. Something NEW. Not like the current 9 series, which is pretty much a rebranding of the 8 series with tweaks. (I know, it is very generalized).

I am also interested in the growing friction between Intel and nVidia. Can't wait to see some blood from that bout.

I dont know why you would want that anyways, considering how superior Intel chipsets are...

Considering the renaming of nVidias graphics drivers from ForceWare to GeForce, I'd presume they plan on keeping the name GeForce for some more time. Unless, of course, they wish to make a very clear difference between old and new chipsets, with the new one having their own drivers. But then again, if they do this, they really need features that differs their new GPUs from old ones, like a true dedicated on-board physics processing unit.

My 2 cents

Dang that sounds insane, a billion transistors? I hope that it's not just two chips with 500 million transistors each but we'll see. The real question is, can it play Crysis on max detail?

My predictions tell me Nvidia will probably be a lazy ass butcher and just amke a 8800GTX with 192spu's instead of a real next gen architecture.
If so, AMD might have a chance with their R770XT, but I doubt that, since it'll probably be just a 3870 with 480spu's.

But that's just me, and I could be wrong.../drinks beer

Probably, the way nVidia has been lately has sucked. The 9 series is a joke.

All previous number bumps have been for something worthwhile. Usually they make it xx50 to denote it being newer arch...

Sigh.
