Well, I don't think these cards are meant to compete with ATi really. As for nVidia's actual competition to Evergreen, if the rumors turn out to be true, it would make sense it's taking longer to get right and to release. A MIMD architecture for your GPU would be a pretty big step forward, and should be worth the wait.

It seems this is going to be just a marketing ploy... not that it wasn't before... but now... it's even more so...Trying to market DX10.1 after they were downplaying it when ATI had it beofre... makes them lose credibility right? But what's sad is that most consumers wouldn't know the difference, and that is what they're aiming for.
