Compression is common these days and is integrated and used in many computer systems. Pictures, movies, documents, music; everything is somehow compressed. HardwareHell sheds some light on the most widely used methods of data compression and their specific advantages and drawbacks for each type of tasks.

“In the past, one of the main reasons was saving storage space. In the beginning of computing, storage space (both volatile, such as RAM, and non-volatile, such as disks) was quite small. However, problems were not smaller. In these days, effort was needed in order to be able to store large amounts of data on the small capacity media. This one of the factors that contributed to the development of compression,” starts the article.
