AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 Overclocked to 4.0GHz 2:32 am | Anton ShilovIntel Corp. has canned its plan to introduce a 4.0GHz processor this year, whereas Advanced Micro Devices even did not get close even to 3.0GHz clock-speed with its central processing units. But enthusiasts are here to “correct” the situation: using phase change cascade cooling system and quite some skills, specialists from XtremeSystems web-site have managed to overclock AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 chip to over 4.0GHz, setting a new world’s record. Ricky and Pedro Rocha of XtremeSystems used DFI nF4 Ultra mainboard as well as a custom-made nitrogen cooling system for the experiment. The maximum achievable speed of the microprocessor was 4005MHz, the HyperTransport bus operated at 286MHz, or 1144MHz. The system was stable enough to take screenshots of CPU identification software called CPU-Z, but no actual benchmarks were run. It was indicated that SuperPI benchmark gets instable at 3.45GHz speed, whereas 3Dmark runs well even at 3.65GHz. Earlier this year another overclocker from XtremeSystems broke the world’s record by running Intel Pentium 4 570J (3.80GHz) chip at 7.22GHz.
