Performance Impact of 2GB System Memory Analyzed. Does 2GB of RAM Bring In Performance Benefit Over 1GB?

10:10 pm | Anton Shilov

For years 1GB of system memory has been almost a standard for a high-performance computer used for gaming or other demanding tasks. However, the time goes by and some software may require more random access memory to run smoothly. The question is whether there are a lot of such programs.

Corsair Memory has posted an issue on the matter, where the relationship between a system’s memory array size and its performance is explored.

“We will build test setups based on current popular hardware and run a variety of benchmarks using both 1GB and 2GB memory array sizes, while keeping memory settings constant. We will tabulate these results and see what conclusions can be drawn,” the article explains.

System performance versus memory size

“The performance increase realized in real-world applications like Battlefield 2 and Adobe Premier Effects elements indicate that the current generation of enthusiast systems will certainly benefit from the selection of 2GB memory arrays. These benefits will become greater in the next six months as new memory-intensive applications and games are brought to market,” the article concludes.
