Keyboard Tape Mod

There are a bunch of mods out there for custom keyboards that can be applied to any board you might have. A lot of the modding involves making your keyboard quieter and less rattly. This is why you lube your switches, fill the keyboard case with foam, and imitate a gasket mount.

Another very simple but efficient mod that helps make your keyboard sound better is the Tempest tape mod. This is a variation to the case foam mod or can be used together with foam to curate the sound signature of your keyboard. This paired with the spacebar tape mod will help you significantly improve the way your keyboard sounds.

A Step-By-Step Guide

This mod is extremely simple and requires you to have basic tools like a screwdriver, some scissors, and some masking tape. It is important to NOT use tape with strong adhesive since it might corrode your PCB or rip parts off when removed.

  1. Locate your screws under your keycaps and take the PCB/plate/switch sandwich out.
  2. keyboard pcb out
  3. Take the masking tape (or any other low adhesive tape you have) and tape the backside of the PCB. Make sure to cut it to size and also cut out any ports or buttons that will need to poke through the case.
  4. tape on keyboard pcb
  5. Poke holes through the tape to make sure you can screw the assembly down back to your case.
  6. Take your spacebar keycap and cut strips of tape to fill in the gaps. This will take a while but be patient and keep at it. The mod will help a lot, making your spacebar sound less hollow and more poppy.
  7. tape on space key
  8. With everything done assemble your keyboard and enjoy a more poppy and muted sound!
