Titanfall 2 – FPS Cap Quick Fix

Titanfall 2 has had a sudden resurgence in popularity after the matchmaking services and DDOS-ing issues were fixed by Respawn. With a bunch of people coming back to the game, many players are noticing the game feeling a little bit weird – not very smooth or responsive.

The reason for these issues is the forced 144 FPS cap that negatively affects your aim and enjoyment of the game if you have a 240+ Hz screen. There is however a very simple fix to this issue that allows you to play at uncapped/custom FPS caps.

FPS Cap Fix

The way you disable the 144 FPS forced cap in Titanfall 2 is by enabling some type of V-Sync in the game menu while having it disabled in your GPU driver panel. This is how I did it for my NVIDIA GPU:

  1. Open up NVPanel and go to the 3D Settings tab – scroll all the way down and make sure V-Sync is disabled
  2. nvidia panel 3d settings
  3. In the same panel go to Program Settings select Titanfall 2 and set a custom frame rate cap
  4. nvidia panel 3d settings frame rate cap
  5. Open Titanfall 2 and enable V-Sync in the video settings
  6. titanfall vsync
  7. Use any monitoring software with an FPS readout like RTSS or Presentmon to confirm your game is now running the correct FPS cap
  8. titanfall 2 frame rate

It is important to use a tool that shows your frametime graph so you can confirm it is a smooth line which would mean the FPS cap is working properly.

This fix is essential if you are running G-Sync or any other VRR technology on your monitor, or if you want to use an FPS cap that is 2x your refresh rate for a smooth image with no tearing. If you want to run uncapped FPS altogether there is bad news since every time I tested with no FPS cap, the frame times were unstable making the game unplayable.

Things to Note

While this simple fix allows you to run Titanfall 2 at higher FPS (this should have worked by default in 2023 by the way Respawn) you need to be careful of your CPU and GPU temperatures since now you are putting a bigger load on your components.

Make sure your machine is properly cooled and you should be fine.
